We’ve all know that the sea has amazing healing benefits, from daily swims in cold water to the natural minerals and salt for your skin. But what about that little known bio-marine wonder, red algae?
Did you know that red algae boasts a rich source of nutrients, vitamins and minerals that are good for your skin? The serums, oils and moisturisers you buy to help you achieve that Hollywood glow are all within the bioactive compound of red algae.
Our Red Algae Infused Gel is not the same as a Red Algae Extract
Most red algae is harvested from the sea and must be cleaned of parasites and other contamination before they can be processed. This process involves high temperatures that destroy the vitamins and essential peptides present in red algae, thus decreasing its potency.
At Seacra, we grow and harvest our red algae in specially designed pools within greenhouses in a nature reserve along the Mediterranean coast. Then we process the Red Algae using a cold-press method, keeping it at a safe temperature to preserve all its vitamins and essential peptides.
We produce our Red Algae gel from the whole Algae, not just its’ extract. It is clean, free from ocean contamination and can deliver up to 10x more potency than other similar products on the market.
Red Algae Benefits for The Skin
Red Algae is a type of seaweed widely used in cosmetics and beauty. It has many benefits for skin health, such as strengthening the skin barrier and improving overall skin texture.
Please note that all the benefits of red algae listed here are supported by a study published in the NCBI.
Natural Anti-Ageing
When exposed to ultraviolet radiation, the skin produces reactive oxygen species (ROS) that cause DNA damage, contributing to premature ageing and the formation of fine lines and wrinkles. Extensive use of photoprotection products can reduce this damage.
Red Algae contain natural anti-aging substances such as fucoidan and carotenoids that protect your skin against ageing caused by exposure to ultraviolet light from the sun and other sources, effectively reducing fine lines and wrinkles.
Natural Antioxidant
Free radicals, produced naturally by the body and created through exposure to sunlight, pollution, environmental toxins, tobacco use and stress, cause inflammation that disrupts the skin's regular self-repair cycle. This can cause hyperpigmentation, acne and cell damage, leading to wrinkles. Antioxidants are effective in some cases in preventing damage because they help combat free radicals.
Red Algae is rich in polysaccharides, peptides and carotenoids, contributing to its antioxidant properties. They may help reduce and soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Plus, they have been shown to lighten skin pigmentation by helping to maintain the production of collagen and preventing elastin from breaking down.
Natural Moisturiser and Hydrating Agent
To begin with, maintaining moisture in the skin is important to skincare and it improves the skin texture and its state. It becomes more even-toned, healthier-looking and plumper when your skin is properly hydrated.
Red Algae is a wonderful ingredient that can keep the water in your skin longer, so you have firmer-looking skin. But how does it work? It contains polysaccharides which are carbohydrates molecules. They have the maximum water-holding capacity and were shown to have greater hydrating and moisturising effects than hyaluronic acid, as a research article described in NCBI.
As a result of its moisturising and hydrating properties, Red Algae gel is considered one of the best to combat skin dryness and improve skin elasticity and texture. It helps balance the moisture level of your skin while maintaining the lipid barrier, thus, resulting in better hydrated and smoother, softer skin.
Natural Lightening Pigmentation
Bioactive compounds of Red Algae have been shown to have anti-melanogenic properties. Melanocytes are the cells that give your skin its colour. The more melanin produced by these cells, the darker the skin will appear.
Sun damage or acne marks can cause hyperpigmentation that makes your skin look dark in specific patches. Lightening the skin pigmentation is achieved by inhibiting tyrosinase, an enzyme that promotes melanin production in the skin. By inhibiting excess amounts of melanin, you aid in lightening the pigmentation of your skin. Red algae-infused skincare products effectively treat fading dark areas; they help lighten dark patches in your skin, restoring it to its natural healthy glow.
