Suppose you’re wondering how to get rid of acne. In that case, the chances are you’ve already visited a dermatologist, plastered your skin with toxic chemicals from azelaic acid, and even taken prescription drugs.
Your skin probably feels sore and sensitive now, and you wonder if you’ll ever get rid of acne.
Instead of moving onto the lists of ‘miraculous’ home remedies that the internet spews out in response to your search, from honey masks to toothpaste plasters, what you really need to do is take a step back and understand what causes acne before you start trying to get rid of it.
What is Acne?
Acne is one of the most common skin conditions in the world, affecting up to 85 million adults. It can be debilitating, causing a complete lack of confidence and can affect everything from job interviews to first dates.
Acne starts when the pores in your skin get clogged with oil and dead skin cells. Each pore is connected to a sebaceous gland, producing an oily sebum. Extra sebum can plug pores, causing increased growth of bacteria known as Propionibacterium acnes, or P. acnes.
Your white blood cells attack P. acnes, leading to skin inflammation and acne. Some cases of acne are more severe than others, but common symptoms include whiteheads, blackheads, and pimples.

What causes acne?
Many different factors contribute to the severity of acne; genetics, hormones, lifestyle factors, stress, diet and infections.
What makes acne worse?
Many acne treatments actually make acne worse. The medicated treatments often make the skin extremely sore, sensitive, and dry, leading to the user stopping the treatment and causing another flare-up.
This leads to the problem being worse for the person suffering with acne and then also having to treat additional issues such as sensitive skin.
Many of the recommended treatments strip the skin barrier of oils, as people believe that by removing the oils and moisture from the skin, they will get rid of acne. This is, in fact, the opposite.
Exfoliating daily, drying the skin out and applying harsh toxic chemicals to ‘kill bacteria’ is also a no no.
What is the skin barrier?
The skin barrier is one of the most important things to consider when trying to get rid of acne. It keeps good things in, such as moisture, vitamins, and nutrients, and bad things out, such as chemicals and pollutants, and prevents water loss.
You can read more about this in our article on Skin Barrier repair.
If your skin barrier isn’t strong, your skin will be vulnerable to damage. It’ll be more prone to dehydration, or trans-epidermal water loss, resulting in a dull, dry appearance. You’ll also be less able to fend off damaging aggressors like free radicals. Free radicals can result in physical changes such as discolouration, laxity, and premature wrinkles.

By fixing the skin barrier, you can get rid of acne.
Acne, the Skin Barrier, and the Gut.
The other missing link is the gut. The health of your skin and how it looks on the outside is intrinsically linked to the health of your gut on the inside.
Inflammation is one of the causes of skin conditions such as acne, rosacea, and eczema. If your gut is inflamed, this can represent itself as skin conditions on the outside. Gut inflammation is linked to hormones, stress levels, infection, and diet.

How to get rid of acne
The first step in getting rid of acne is to try and reinforce the skin barrier.
Many of these medicated products strip the skin barrier of its natural oils, moisture, and PH-balancing properties. This allows pollutants and free radicals to penetrate the dermis of the skin which causes inflammation and reactions, purveying itself as acne.
By strengthening the skin barrier, you are reinforcing protection, which prevents these pollutants from entering the skin.
